{"id":194756,"date":"2025-04-25T09:13:20","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T07:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heritagemalta.mt\/?post_type=events&#038;p=194756"},"modified":"2025-11-17T09:13:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T08:13:17","slug":"exploring-the-phoenician-shipwreck-off-xlendi-gozo-2","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/heritagemalta.mt\/whats-on\/exploring-the-phoenician-shipwreck-off-xlendi-gozo-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off Xlendi, Gozo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><p>An exhibition about a<strong> Phoenician shipwreck<\/strong> located off Xlendi, Gozo, is open at the <strong>National Museum of Archaeology<\/strong>, enabling visitors to experience the work behind the first-ever excavation by scientific divers beyond 100 metres.&nbsp;<\/p><p><\/p><p>First discovered in 2007, <strong>the wreck site of a 7<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century BC Phoenician trading vessel<\/strong> is located at a depth of 110 metres. The depth of the site has ensured its well-preserved condition but has also made it extremely challenging to investigate.&nbsp;<\/p><p><\/p><p>The decision to conduct an excavation at a depth of 110 metres was made in 2018. Two years later, a significant number of objects were recovered from the wreck, including <strong>complete amphorae, ceramic fragments, smaller whole jugs and urns<\/strong>, <strong>some<\/strong> of which are<strong> rare and unique in the Maltese archaeological record<\/strong>. A particularly <strong>exciting discovery<\/strong> was that of a <strong>mortise and tenon joint<\/strong>, an ancient shipbuilding technique used to assemble ships\u2019 hulls.<\/p><p><\/p><p>2021 saw the last season of excavation on the Phoenician Shipwreck Project. A rare and thrilling discovery was that of a human tooth \u2013 the first human remains to be discovered on the site. This lower, right, first molar was sent for further tests, including carbon dating and DNA analysis.<\/p><p><\/p><p><strong>The exhibition<\/strong>, previously held at the Citadel in Gozo and at the National Aquarium, <strong>focuses on the innovative techniques used to scientifically excavate a deep-water site, while showcasing artefacts recovered from the wreck<\/strong>.
