Disasters of War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Peninsular War&nbsp;(1808-1814) between France and Spain<\/strong> was a violent convulsion of anarchy, starvation and slaughter with long-lasting catastrophic effects. <\/p><p><br>To have survived such a war was a remarkable feat in itself but Spanish artist <strong>Goya <\/strong>went much further, immortalizing the <strong>brutality of that conflict<\/strong> with a series of <strong>80 etchings titled <em>The Disasters of War<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>From the 4<sup>th<\/sup> of November<\/strong> onwards, Heritage Malta is exhibiting <strong>prints of these engravings at the Grand Master\u2019s Palace<\/strong>, thanks to the collaboration of <strong>Fundacion MAPFRE<\/strong> as well as <strong>MAPFRE Malta<\/strong> and the <strong>Bank of Valletta Foundation<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Francisco Jos\u00e9 de <strong>Goya <\/strong>y Lucientes (1746-1828) is <strong>considered<\/strong> to be the <strong>most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries<\/strong>. <br>This is the <strong>very first time in Malta that an entire exhibition is dedicated to his work<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>The<em> Disasters of War<\/em> series<\/strong> (c.1810-15) is deemed as <strong>Goya\u2019s personal reflection on the devastating effects of the war on the people<\/strong>, showing <strong>scenes <\/strong>that are <strong>raw and unsettling<\/strong> in their depiction of battlefield horror and dehumanization.<\/p><p>With this work, Goya breaks away from a number of painterly traditions. <br>Indeed, <strong><em>The Disasters of War<\/em> is the first example in the history of painting where war and its consequences are depicted not as heroic acts, but as the tragedy and barbarism that they truly stand for.<\/strong><\/p><p>Albeit depicting the war in Spain, <strong>Goya\u2019s images could relate to any war<\/strong> \u2013 which is what renders this <strong>exhibition incredibly powerful and of contemporary relevance<\/strong>.<\/p><p><\/p><p><br><br><\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><p><\/p><p><em><em>Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029Vb4UJxw1yT29ko3Gkq2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heritage Malta\u2019s WhatsApp Channel <\/a>to stay informed!<\/em><\/em><\/p><p><em>Receive important alerts, including updates about potential event postponements due to unforeseen circumstances<\/em>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Peninsular War&nbsp;(1808-1814) between France and Spain was a violent convulsion of &hellip;
